A ZIF connector FPC membrane switch quote should not start with artwork alone. The buyer should send the connector pitch, contact side, pin count, exposed finger length, stiffener thickness, tail route, bend limit and housing clearance together with the keypad drawing. Without those details, a sample can look correct on the front surface but fail when the tail reaches the PCB.

This is a practical supply-chain question, not only a drawing preference. Start with the connector model, not only the tail shape

The connector model controls more than the number of pins. It sets pitch, insertion direction, contact side, locking style, accepted tail thickness and how much exposed copper should enter the connector. If the buyer sends only a photo of the old keypad, the supplier may quote a tail that appears similar but does not lock reliably in the actual board connector.

Send the connector datasheet or part number whenever possible. If the final connector has not been chosen, state the expected pitch, pin count, top-contact or bottom-contact orientation, board location and available insertion direction. For replacement sourcing, include a photo of the PCB connector with a ruler and a clear note showing which side of the old tail faces the contacts.

The first quotation can then separate three decisions: the switch circuit pattern, the FPC tail construction and the connector mating requirement. That separation prevents a late sample dispute where the keypad functions on a bench fixture but cannot be inserted into the device.

Define exposed fingers and stiffener before sampling

The exposed finger area is the small contact zone at the end of the flex tail. Its length, plating expectation, registration and edge quality affect connector fit. The stiffener behind the tail also matters because it controls insertion support and thickness at the connector slot.

A common failure mode is a stiffener that is acceptable in open handling but too long inside the housing. Another is a contact side that matches the drawing but faces the wrong side after the tail is folded. Both problems are cheaper to fix before the first sample than after the artwork, tooling and assembly fixture are already aligned.

Show the bend route from keypad to PCB

An FPC membrane switch is often selected because the control surface is thin and the PCB sits in a tight location. That advantage disappears if the tail must fold sharply at the panel edge, twist under the adhesive area or pass through a narrow slot with no strain relief.

Mark the tail route on the housing drawing. Show the exit side, the first bend location, minimum bend radius, slot size, PCB connector position and whether the tail moves during service. If the tail must pass under a gasket, through a snap-fit cover or beside a screw boss, include that mechanical detail.

The engineering review should also ask whether the tail will be inserted before or after the overlay is bonded. If assembly workers must insert the tail after the front panel is fixed, the connector direction and finger stiffness become more important than they appear on the flat drawing.

Match keypad evidence with the electrical drawing

The front keypad design and the flexible circuit must be reviewed together. Key spacing, embossing, LED or window areas, tactile domes and adhesive borders can affect where the circuit traces and tail can run. A neat front panel does not prove that the internal circuit has enough space for the selected connector pitch.

If the RFQ is for a replacement part, add the reason for replacement. A cracked tail, loose connector, worn key, lifted overlay and changed housing each point to a different review path.

Decide what the first sample must prove

A first FPC membrane switch sample should prove more than appearance. It should answer whether the keypad actuates correctly, whether the tail reaches the PCB without stress, whether the connector locks, whether the contact side is correct and whether the assembly sequence is realistic.
