Public EV Charger HMI Sourcing: One Front-Panel Supplier or Split Scope?

Use one front-panel supplier when the bezel, printed overlay, protected service keypad, sealing land, tail exit and enclosure datums must move as one controlled revision. Split the scope when the display, certified meter, payment terminal and charger controller are already qualified modules with stable mechanical and electrical interfaces. The RFQ should name the owner of every shared datum, window, gasket edge, artwork variant, cable route and acceptance test. A single supplier can reduce interface disputes, but only inside a defined panel package. It should not inherit metrology, payment security, firmware, power electronics or whole-charger compliance simply because those modules sit behind the same door.

Start with ownership, not component labels

A public charger front can look like one assembly while containing several commercial and compliance boundaries. The visible stack may include a decorative bezel, weather-facing graphic layer, display cover or touch window, service keys, seals, adhesives, fasteners and a flexible circuit. Behind it may sit a separately purchased display, legal meter, payment device, communications hardware and charger controller. Calling all of this the HMI does not tell a supplier what to quote.

Start the drawing package with an ownership matrix. Give each visible or hidden part one design owner, one drawing owner, one assembly owner and one acceptance owner. Then mark the shared features that can invalidate two parts at once. A change to the display opening can affect the overlay artwork, bezel, gasket and display keep-out. A moved service key can affect the printed circuit, tail exit, PCB connector and technician access. A revised door flange can change adhesive width and sealing compression.

If those changes are likely to move together, one interface-package supplier can be useful. The package might cover the printed overlay or bezel, window treatment, membrane service keypad, adhesive or gasket lands, flexible tail, connector and registration to the door. If qualified modules already have frozen mounts and connectors, keep them separate and define their interfaces rather than asking the front-panel supplier to absorb them.

A current charger launch makes variant control a sourcing issue

A CTEK company update dated September 9, 2026 announces a market-specific public AC charger with a seven-inch touchscreen, certified metering, transparent billing, dual outlets and installer configuration. The combination shows why a charger family can share a physical platform while adding market and configuration obligations.

The release does not disclose the charger's internal panel construction. It does not say that the product uses a Baoshengda component, and it does not establish a supply relationship. Its value here is narrower: when a charger platform includes a user display, regulated metering and installer access, the sourcing team must separate the replaceable physical interface from modules whose qualification and data responsibilities belong elsewhere.

Keep current-news context short. The durable buying problem is revision ownership. A charger family may need different languages, icons, service actions, payment openings or meter views without changing the base enclosure. The quotation should therefore identify which changes are artwork-only, which require a new front circuit, and which trigger enclosure, display or system revalidation.

Three boundaries decide whether one supplier helps

The first boundary is mechanical registration. If the bezel, overlay, window, keypad and seal all locate from the same door cutout or studs, one supplier can check the complete interface drawing and provide a mounted sample. This reduces the chance that each vendor assumes the other controls the window edge, datum scheme or adhesive width.

The second boundary is electrical ownership. A membrane service keypad can end at a flexible tail and connector. The buyer should define contact side, pitch, pin map, mating part, tail exit, first-bend keep-out and strain relief. The interface supplier can verify continuity and physical fit to the named connector. The charger team still owns input voltage, pull-up or pull-down logic, debounce, diagnostics and the meaning of each command.

The third boundary is qualified-module control. Certified metering, payment security, display electronics, wireless communications and charge-control firmware should remain with their qualified owners unless the contract explicitly transfers those tasks. The front-panel supplier needs their active areas, keep-outs, mounting datums, connector envelopes and service clearances. It does not need vague responsibility for every function visible from the front.

Make the quotation expose what each supplier owns

A useful quotation is not only a unit price and tooling line. It should identify the supplied boundary and list every buyer-controlled input. For a front-panel package, ask whether the price includes artwork preparation, window printing or hard coating, overlay or bezel construction, tactile switch layers, adhesive conversion, gasket features, tail stiffener, connector, protective liner, inspection fixture and mounted first-article evidence.

Record what is excluded. Is the display buyer-supplied? Who procures the mating connector? Does the enclosure arrive before the panel sample? Who controls the payment-device opening? Who performs whole-door leak testing? If a meter window has a legal viewing requirement, who approves it? A clear exclusion is more valuable than a low quotation that silently assumes another party will close the interface.

Variant pricing should also be explicit. Separate changes that require only new printing files from changes that require new cutting tools, circuits, embossing, gaskets or inspection fixtures. Ask how old and new revisions will be segregated during a market transition. A supplier-replacement project needs a plan for legacy stock, service spares and the last acceptable old revision, not just a new drawing number.

Approve samples in three controlled stages

Stage one is the loose interface package. Check outline, thickness, window position, artwork registration, key locations, adhesive or gasket geometry, tail length, contact side, stiffener and connector. Verify switch continuity and the agreed force or tactile window on a controlled support. This stage tells you whether the supplier built its own drawing correctly.

Stage two is the mounted door or enclosure. Use production-intent datums, fasteners, surface finish, adhesive preparation, gasket compression and cable route. Inspect window alignment, edge lift, trapped stress, key movement, tail bend and connector access. Run agreed cleaning and environmental checks on the mounted boundary. Do not infer a complete ingress rating from a loose panel.

Stage three is the powered charger. Confirm that every physical service key reaches the intended controller input, the display remains visible through the specified window and service replacement does not disturb qualified modules. The charger owner should run metering, payment, firmware, network, electrical-safety and system-compliance tests. Keep component, mounted-door and powered-system reports separate so a failure returns to the correct owner.

For supplier replacement, compare the approved old and new parts in the same fixture and enclosure. A dimension-by-dimension report is helpful, but it should be linked to practical risks: window registration, adhesive coverage, seal compression, tail route, connector engagement and actuation. Do not accept “equivalent” as evidence without a revision-linked comparison.

Keep the supplier boundary explicit

An interface supplier can review and manufacture a defined bezel, overlay, membrane keypad, adhesive or gasket feature, flexible tail and connector package. It can provide agreed dimensional, visual, continuity and actuation records and can support a mounted sample when the buyer supplies the correct door, display dummy and fixtures.

That supplier does not certify legal metering, payment security, charger communications, software, controller behavior, power electronics, electrical safety, functional safety, whole-enclosure ingress protection or finished-charger compliance. It also cannot approve an unspecified display window, cleaner, outdoor exposure or service process. Those requirements and test owners must come from the charger OEM or the party responsible for the complete system.

This distinction protects both sides. The buyer receives comparable quotations and useful samples. The component supplier can close the interfaces it actually controls instead of making broad claims about a charger it did not design.
