Why FPC Membrane Switch Pin Maps Reverse Between Drawings

An FPC membrane switch pin map often appears to reverse because two drawings use different viewing directions. One file may number contacts while looking at the keypad front. Another may number them from the connector mating side. Both can look internally consistent, yet they can produce a sample in which the up key triggers down, or a common line lands on the wrong PCB input.

Prevent that problem by controlling four items together: the keypad orientation, the contact side of the tail, a physical Pin 1 datum and one approved key-to-pin table. The table should remain the electrical authority even when the tail outline or artwork changes.

Choose one viewing direction for every controlled file

Words such as left, right, top and bottom become ambiguous as soon as the keypad or tail is flipped. A drawing viewed from the graphic-overlay side is not the same as a drawing viewed from the adhesive side. The contact order at the tail can also appear reversed when the FPC is turned over to enter a board connector.

Put the viewing direction in the title block of each controlled drawing. Useful labels include:

Add an asymmetric mechanical datum that survives every view. A notch, offset corner, tail-exit edge or marked Key 1 centerline is more reliable than a loose rotation arrow. If the product can be installed in more than one orientation, define the allowed orientation in the housing drawing as well.

Define Pin 1 with geometry, not color alone

A colored mark can disappear from a manufacturing layer, a monochrome PDF or a cropped screenshot. Pin 1 needs a geometric reference. State the contact pitch, the number of fingers and the distance from Pin 1 to a named tail edge. Then show whether numbering proceeds toward or away from the opposite edge.

For example, a six-contact tail might be defined as: contact side up, tail pointing away from the keypad, Pin 1 nearest the notched edge. That sentence is useful only when the drawing also shows the notch and the same orientation. If the connector datasheet numbers contacts from the mating side, include that view next to the FPC view rather than assuming they match.

The practical tradeoff is service simplicity versus routing freedom. Turning the tail can make enclosure assembly easier, but it may reverse the apparent contact order and place the conductive side against the wrong connector contact. A route change therefore needs an electrical review, not only a mechanical sign-off.

Keep one key-to-pin table as the electrical authority

Artwork names should not be the only electrical definition. Icons can move while firmware names stay fixed, and two arrow symbols can be confused during revision review. Build a table with one controlled row for each input:

This table exposes conflicts that separate artwork, circuit and PCB files can hide. If one key shares a common line, state it explicitly. If a circuit matrix is used, include the matrix coordinates and the expected continuity pair for each key. Do not infer the map from copper-trace appearance in a product photograph or flattened PDF.

Separate mechanical, artwork and electrical revisions

A tail length change may leave the pin map untouched. An icon swap may change the user function without changing the circuit. A connector change can keep the keypad layout but alter finger pitch, contact-side orientation or pin numbering. One revision letter for all files makes it difficult to know which combination was sampled.

Use separate revision identifiers for the mechanical outline, graphic artwork, circuit or key map and connector interface. A sample traveler or approval sheet should list the exact combination. If any controlled file changes, review its dependency rather than automatically advancing every revision.

One failure mode deserves special attention: a buyer rotates the keypad artwork by 180 degrees to suit a housing, but the circuit and tail view remain unchanged. The legends now look correct in the enclosure, while the original electrical mapping drives the opposite functions. A controlled Key 1 datum and continuity table reveal that error before firmware is used to compensate for it.

Test continuity in the installed orientation

Bench continuity alone proves that a switch closes. It does not prove that the intended physical key reaches the intended PCB input after the tail is folded and connected.

For the first sample, place the keypad in its actual housing orientation and connect it through the intended connector. Press each key once and record the physical key ID, FPC contacts, PCB input and displayed or logged function. Repeat the check after the tail is routed through its normal bend and strain-relief path.

The sample report should include a front-view photo with Key 1 identified, a rear or tail-routing photo, a close view of the contact side entering the connector and the completed continuity table. A photo of the loose keypad beside a meter is not enough if the assembly requires the tail to flip.

Send a controlled mapping package with the RFQ

Provide the keypad front artwork, mechanical outline, tail-exit direction, contact-side view, connector part number, finger pitch, contact count, Pin 1 datum, key-to-pin table and expected quantity. Add the housing or PCB view that shows the installed orientation. If firmware has already assigned functions, include those stable input names rather than only the visible legends.

When using the Request Quote page, attach one annotated page that places the keypad front view, connector mating view and key-to-pin table together. Mark the contact-side orientation and one physical Key 1 datum. That single page gives the supplier a clear reference for checking whether the artwork, FPC circuit, connector and PCB assignment all describe the same part.
