Embossed Graphic Overlay RFQ: Define Dome Datums Before Tooling

An embossed graphic overlay RFQ should define one common datum system for the printed artwork, embossed keys, display windows, adhesive openings and housing features before tooling starts. Without that shared reference, each file can look correct by itself while the assembled panel places a raised key off the switch center or leaves too little flat land for adhesive.

For buyers, the first decision is not simply dome height. It is which housing edges, holes or window corners control every other feature. Baoshengda can review the film artwork, emboss locations, window geometry, adhesive die line and sample evidence for a custom graphic overlay and film panel. The equipment maker still owns the housing dimensions, switch-center coordinates and acceptable feel because those inputs determine whether the overlay can be registered and mounted consistently.

Use one datum system across artwork, tooling and the housing

Choose stable mechanical references that the supplier can measure on both drawings and samples. A machined housing edge, a pair of locating holes or a display-window corner can work. A printed border by itself is a weak master datum because print position has its own tolerance and may shift relative to the cut perimeter.

The drawing should show X and Y origins, the rotation reference and the feature that controls part orientation. Then dimension embossed key centers, display windows, cutouts and the outer profile from that same system. If the artwork file uses one origin and the housing drawing uses another, include a simple coordinate table that maps them.

A useful RFQ package identifies:

This structure lets tooling, printing and die cutting be reviewed as one stack instead of as separate drawings.

Define the embossed key geometry, not only its center point

A center coordinate does not fully describe an embossed key. The supplier also needs the emboss type, outline, height direction and transition area. A pillow emboss, rim emboss and formed dome can occupy different amounts of flat film around the same printed icon.

For each key, state the finished emboss outline and the allowable relationship between the raised area and the printed legend. If the overlay sits above a metal dome or membrane-switch contact, include the switch-center location beneath the film. A raised key that is visually centered but mechanically offset can feel weak on one side or miss the intended actuation area.

The tradeoff is between a stronger tactile landmark and the flat land needed for printing, adhesive and nearby windows. Increasing dome diameter or height may improve finger location, but it can also move the forming transition closer to a window edge, printed border or adhesive opening. The drawing should therefore show the full formed zone, not only the top of the dome.

Protect flat land around windows, edges and adhesive openings

Embossing changes the local film shape. If a dome transition runs into a display window, outer edge or narrow adhesive strip, the overlay may not sit flat after assembly. The risk is higher when the housing has a shallow recess or when the adhesive die line follows the artwork too closely.

Mark a flat-land zone around each critical window and along the housing perimeter. Keep the adhesive opening clear of the formed transition unless the construction has been reviewed for that geometry. For an integrated switch assembly, also show whether a spacer, metal dome, tail or circuit layer changes the stack height below the embossed area.

During sample review, inspect the part both free-standing and mounted to the real housing. A sample can look flat on a table but bridge across a recess, boss or gasket after installation. Mounted photos from a low angle help reveal lifted corners, window distortion and local waves near embossed keys.

Send files that can be compared without guesswork

The fastest RFQ review happens when artwork and mechanical files identify the same revision and the same origin. Send vector artwork for printing, a dimensioned PDF for review, the housing drawing or 3D model, the adhesive die line and a separate emboss layer. If a switch layer is involved, add the contact-center or metal-dome coordinates.

Use clear layer names rather than relying on color alone. For example:

Include the revision date and identify which file controls if two dimensions disagree. A short note such as “housing drawing controls key-center position; artwork controls legend shape” prevents the supplier from resolving conflicts by assumption.

Approve the first sample with measured registration evidence

Do not approve an embossed overlay only from a front-view photo. The sample report should connect visible appearance to the drawing datums. Measure several key centers from the agreed reference, confirm window position, inspect the outer profile and check the flat land around formed features.

A practical first-sample record can include:

Check more than one sample if the tooling creates several parts per sheet or if the panel has widely separated keys. A single good position does not show whether registration is consistent across the tool area.

What to put in the quotation request

An actionable quotation request states the film material and surface finish, finished size, printing colors, window requirements, emboss type, key count, adhesive construction, housing reference, sample quantity and expected production quantity. It should also state whether the supplier is quoting a graphic overlay only or an integrated membrane-switch assembly.

When submitting the project through the Request Quote page, attach the mechanical drawing, artwork, emboss layer and adhesive die line together. Mark the master datum and one critical key on the PDF. That gives Baoshengda a specific basis for reviewing registration, tooling scope and sample evidence before the first formed parts are made.
