A packaging-machine membrane keypad should not be quoted from a front photo alone. Before replacing its supplier, freeze a state contract that pairs every visible key, display or indicator opening and legend with the controller action it requests, the feedback state it must show and the circuit pin that carries it. Preserve the enclosure opening, adhesive landing, tail exit, connector orientation and cleaning exposure in the same revision. An August 25 A3 and Omron packaging-automation article explains that disconnected barcode, sensing and motion events leave operators without enough context to diagnose faults. A replacement panel must preserve that fault, recipe and changeover context rather than merely copy the artwork.
Why the August 25 packaging signal matters to a keypad buyer
The A3-hosted article describes a practical packaging-line problem: a barcode check, presence sensor and motion controller may each report an event, while the operator still cannot tell whether a stop came from the wrong label, a misplaced package, an incorrect recipe, a changeover error or a developing mechanical condition. Its main point is system integration, not membrane switches.
The physical HMI still matters because it is where many operators request a mode, acknowledge a condition, select a recipe or start a controlled recovery. If a replacement keypad changes the meaning of a key, hides an indicator, reverses a connector pin or removes the distinction between request and confirmation, the new part can preserve electrical continuity while weakening troubleshooting. That is the useful component decision behind the news: quote the keypad against the machine's state contract, not against appearance alone.
Build the replacement around one state contract
A state contract is a controlled table that connects four evidence layers. Keeping them in one revision prevents a drawing, circuit file or software note from quietly drifting away from the others.
- **Operator layer:** key name, legend, normal availability, long-press or multi-key behavior and the feedback an operator expects after activation.
- **Control layer:** requested controller action, valid preconditions, rejected or delayed state, acknowledgement rule and recovery ownership.
- **Electrical layer:** switch contact or matrix position, tail conductor, connector pin view, LED or backlight circuit and allowable electrical load supplied by the buyer.
- **Mechanical layer:** panel outline, window and indicator positions, adhesive landing, housing cutout, tail exit, first bend, connector access and service orientation.
Start by giving each fixed key and indicator a stable identifier. A label such as K05 or LED03 is more reliable across artwork, circuit and test files than color or position alone. Record connector views from a named side, because Pin 1 can appear reversed when a drawing switches between mating and rear views. Then tie each state to an observable result. A START request, for example, is not proven by a continuity beep; the mounted system must show whether the request was accepted, delayed or rejected.

The table is not a request for the keypad supplier to recreate the machine's software. It is a way for the buyer to expose every interface that can invalidate the replacement. Where old files disagree, mark the conflict and resolve it before price comparison. Do not let a lower quotation silently choose the winning revision.
Prove one fault-to-recovery sequence on the mounted sample
A loose keypad can pass dimensions, continuity and cosmetic review while the mounted replacement still fails the service workflow. Select one representative packaging sequence that crosses several state boundaries, then use the approved machine test mode or a signal simulator. Do not defeat guards or safety circuits to create a test condition.
1. Confirm the machine is in the agreed safe service state and record the displayed mode.
2. Press each key in the sequence once and verify the controller sees the intended channel, not only a local continuity result.
3. Present an agreed non-safety test condition, such as a simulated missing label or package-presence mismatch.
4. Verify that the correct message or indicator becomes visible and that unrelated keys remain unavailable where the controller requires it.
5. Test acknowledge, silence and reset only if those are separate authorized functions. Record which action changes the display and which action changes the machine state.
6. Repeat the sequence after a controlled power cycle if power-recovery behavior is part of acceptance.
7. Inspect the adhesive perimeter, window registration, tail bend and connector seating after the mounted sequence.
Record pass criteria before the test. "Works like the old panel" is not a criterion. A useful result names the expected input channel, visible feedback, rejected-state behavior and physical condition after the sequence.
Keep control, motion and safety ownership outside the keypad quote
A membrane keypad supplier can manufacture the graphic overlay, embossing, dome or contact stack, spacer, adhesive, printed circuit, flexible tail, connector, display window and specified LED or backlight features. The supplier can also test dimensions, visual quality, continuity, contact behavior and other agreed component attributes.
The supplier cannot determine the correct recipe, diagnose a barcode failure, validate traceability records, rewrite PLC logic, approve motion behavior or decide whether a machine is safe to restart. Guard circuits, emergency stops, safety-rated inputs and the final risk assessment remain with the machine owner and the authorized control or safety team. A normal membrane keypad must not be treated as a safety-rated device merely because it carries a red STOP legend.
This boundary protects both sides of the quotation. The keypad supplier receives clear, testable component requirements. The machine owner keeps responsibility for software, sensing, motion, safety and production acceptance instead of asking a component sample to prove the whole automation system.
What should the drawing and RFQ handoff contain?
For a custom membrane switch or replacement keypad quotation, send a controlled package that lets engineering, purchasing and the supplier refer to the same revision:
- front artwork with every key, legend, display window and indicator assigned a stable identifier;
- dimensioned outline, cutouts, adhesive landing, housing support and installed orientation;
- state matrix covering valid, delayed, rejected, acknowledged and reset behavior where applicable;
- switch contact or circuit matrix with connector-side pin numbering, voltage and current limits supplied by the buyer;
- tail exit, first-bend keepout, connector part or mating definition and service-access direction;
- overlay material, surface finish, embossing, tactile reference, backlight or LED requirements and expected viewing conditions;
- cleaning chemicals, wipe method, temperature, moisture and other actual service exposures;
- sample quantity, mounted test sequence, acceptance evidence, production quantity and controlled revision identifiers.
When the existing panel is incomplete or files conflict, identify what is measured, what is inferred and what remains undecided. A supplier can then quote the known scope and isolate open engineering work instead of hiding uncertainty inside the unit price.
